A few weeks back, I was at the Health Web 2.0 conference and had a great time listening to creative ideas, energetic people and alot of the same thing. Now, there were many really super cool concepts to include Sophia's Garden virtual world which helps families and health professionals collaborate online regarding their children's illness. Another extremely intriguing product was the online drug interaction search application by DoubleCheckMD which uses natural language/AI to help educate consumers on drug interactions based upon basic signs and symptoms.
Along with these very cool applications was a constant theme of health searches and health social networks...over and over again.
Now, there is no problem with multiple "flavors" but I ask, "has anyone thought about the impact on creating tons of new systems with no universal login or design built upon user experience best practices?". The login is a big deal for me. Most sites that I have seen do not participate in any type of shared login system (such as OpenID) and are creating yet more and more silos on the web. I wish I heard one presentation say, " and so you don't have to re-register for other networks, we added OpenID or X ID system". I know there are barriers to this, but it is at least a first step.
Now, please know that there are alot of great ideas out there for both health search and social networks (Daily Strength, Healia, ect). I just hope the community pulls together and realizes the value of openness and cross site registration.
